A Florida man has been charged in a Saturday crash in Chattanooga’s North Shore that killed two pedestrians.
In a news release issued Sunday, police said Randy Vega, 44, of Tampa, Florida, was arrested on charges of aggravated vehicular assault by impairment, driving under the influence, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and two counts of vehicular homicide by impairment.
According to the release, a Dodge Grand Caravan and Nissan Titan collided in the 200 block of Frazier Avenue around 3 p.m. After the crash, the Caravan struck three pedestrians who were on the sidewalk, then struck a building on Frazier Avenue.
The three pedestrians were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the Caravan was taken to a hospital with less serious injuries, according to the release, which said he would be taken afterward to the Hamilton County Jail.
The building housing Walnut Street Bridge Gift Shop was badly damaged in the crash. A city inspector came to the scene to assess the situation.
Frazier Avenue was closed for about four hours for investigation at the north end of the Walnut Street Bridge.
