A man was injured on Wednesday afternoon at a two-story building in South Miami, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel.
The man was working on construction when there was a structural collapse at 6075 SW 64 St., according to M-DFR personnel.
“They were supposedly cutting the walls, and they cut it very far into the corner,” a construction worker said in Spanish, adding that the workers didn’t anticipate that the wall could collapse forward.
Concrete fell on the man’s leg. Firefighters freed the man who was trapped under the rubble and suffered serious injuries. Paramedics left with him in an ambulance.
Miami-Dade County property records show the building was first erected in 1954, and Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church sold it and two adjacent lots to Da’Wah Li-Islam in 2023.
A website described the property as the home of the Islamic Community Center of Miami funded by The Dawah Li Islam Foundation.
“We have been able to procure and begin remodeling work,” a representative wrote in a statement published on the Islamic Community Center’s site, adding that the plan also included a mosque.
The center’s website showed inspirational photographs of The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque in Selangor, Malaysia, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
South Miami police officers also responded to the structural collapse, which was under investigation.
