Convicted felon allegedly threatens to hit bystanders with baseball bat at community center

A Eustis man was arrested for allegedly threatening to hit people with a baseball bat, forcing them to take shelter in a community center.

A deputy responded to a call regarding an aggravated assault at around 8:28 a.m. Oct. 23 according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival, the deputy met with female witness who stated that 37-year-old Larry Kyle Longworth chased two victims and one other person who did not want to get involved with a baseball into the Pine Lakes Community Center, located at 31635 Lakeview Drive, the report said.

The deputy next spoke to the first victim who stated he was walking to the community center when Longworth came up to him talking about him getting kicked out of his house and acting as if he wanted to hit him. Longworth went to his truck, grabbed a baseball bat and went after the victim with it. The victim feared for his safety and went inside the community center, the report said.

The deputy moved on to the next victim who stated that she and her brother were leaving his house to go to the community center when Longworth came flying into the driveway. He jumped out of his truck, yelling at the first victim, before walking back to his truck to retrieve a baseball bat, the report said.

The two victims and the brother turned and continued walking toward the community center, but Longworth continued to follow them, yelled at them and yielded the bat. The second victim feared for her safety and went inside the community center, the report said.

The report noted that the witness and both victims confirmed the description that matched the baseball bat.

Longworth was later found at 40305 Overlook Drive where he was spotted sitting in a chair with a black sling bag leaning against his leg. He advised that the bag belonged to him. A search incident to arrest revealed two electronic weapons within the bag, the report said.

After being read his rights, Longworth stated he was aware of being a convicted felon and also knew he possessed two electrical weapons, the report said.

Longworth then arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with deadly weapon without intent to kill and two counts of felons in possession of firearm, ammo or electrical weapon. He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $40,000.
