Coral Springs man gets naked, stabs parents after smoking ‘THC vape pen,’ police say

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A Coral Springs man is scheduled for a Thursday court hearing after authorities say he “began to act weird” after smoking a “THC vape pen,” then disrobed and stabbed his mother and father.

Police arrested Alexander Figueroa, 21, on an attempted murder charge for stabbing his father Saturday morning, according to court documents obtained by Local 10 News on Wednesday. He’s also charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for also stabbing his mother, according to those documents.

According to an arrest report from the Coral Springs Police Department and a prosecutorial motion, Figueroa’s cousin told police that after he and Figueroa vaped earlier in the evening, the pair went for a walk around the neighborhood.

Police said during the conversation, Figueroa asked his cousin, “Where do you want to go, heaven or hell?”

The report states his cousin got scared and avoided answering the question. Then, police said, Figueroa told him, “Let’s take off our shirts.”

“(The cousin) didn’t want to take off his shirt but said that Alexander took off his shirt and threw it on the ground,” detectives wrote in the report.

Figueroa then began acting “aggressively” when his cousin said he didn’t want to walk far, police said, then grabbed his phone and smashed it.

The person took the broken phone back home and Figueroa began walking around the neighborhood, causing concerned relatives to begin looking for him, police said.

After Figueroa’s mother and cousin located him and got him into a car, he “began acting erratic and (tried) to kick out the window,” the report states.

After parking in the garage, Figueroa “ran into the house” and “locked the door behind him,” police wrote. Two people, whose identities were redacted from the report, went to the front door, where they “could see Alexander through the window, naked, screaming and yelling,” according to the report.

“The other family members run to the driveway where Alexander begins attacking and stabbing (his mother),” police wrote. “(Figueroa’s father) intervenes and stumbles to the ground at which point Alexander begins stabbing (him). (Figueroa’s mother) then intervenes and is again attacked by Alexander causing her to fall to the ground where he repeatedly punches her in the face.”

Police said Figueroa stopped attacking them and instead tried to attack the family dog before one of the victims was able to run to a neighbor’s house and call 911.

The report states that officers would locate Figueroa’s father in a master bedroom, lying down “with a laceration to his stomach” and “his bowels exposed.”

“(He) stated that his son Alexander was the person (who) stabbed him and that Alexander had been having some mental issues for a while,” police wrote.

Figueroa’s mother sustained a large laceration to her head, according to prosecutors.

Police arrested Figueroa and took him to the Broward Main Jail, where he remained held without bond as of Wednesday. A judge ordered he receive a mental health screening.

Thursday’s hearing is a state’s motion for pre-trial detention, in which prosecutors argue that Figueroa should remain behind bars. According to Broward court records, it’s scheduled for 9 a.m. in front of Judge Andrew Siegel.
