A man and a woman from Pennsylvania died Thursday after the two became trapped in a rip current, Florida authorities said.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, 51-year-old Brian Warter and 48-year-old Erica Wishard got caught in the rip current while swimming on Hutchinson Island.
The Pennsylvania couple was vacationing in Florida with their six children at the time of their drownings, the sheriff’s office said.
The two adults and two of their teen children were initially swept out into the ocean by a rip current, officials said. The teens were able to break the current and tried helping their parents, but they were forced to swim back to shore after the conditions became too dangerous.
Lifeguards with the Martin County Fire Rescue performed CPR after they eventually located Warter and Wishard, but the two were later declared dead, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies helped the couple’s children while they waited for other family members to arrive in Florida.
