Crews extinguished a blaze that spread through a home in Fort Lauderdale.
The incident took place on Vermont Avenue just off West Broward Boulevard and Southwest 38th Avenue, Sunday night.
7News spoke Tommy Hurst, a family member who said the fire started from an air conditioner.
“My mother, my sister, and my nephew they called me and they were like ‘The house is on fire’ and I just dropped everything at work and came,” he said.
The family said they heard a spark and flames engulfed the home, forcing them to quickly evacuate the home.
Three people were inside at the time—Thankfully they all made it out.
“She heard a big spark and when she came out and checked the whole garage was on fire,” said Hurst.
Fire crews worked quickly to put out the flames and protect neighboring properties.
The granddaughter of the couple who owns the home said she’s thankful they left only minutes before the flames ignited.
“I got here, and I was just hoping that she and my aunt were out of the house when it happened. I know my family had just left here like less than five minutes ago, and everybody just had to rush back here to make sure that everybody was out of the house because you don’t want to lose family before a holiday. That’s not good,” she said.
Hurst showed 7News inside of the house, with parts of it filled with debris and the walls charred after crews extinguished the blaze.
By Monday afternoon, it was clear the house was a total loss as large portions of the home were boarded up with wood covering the windows and garage.
The Red Cross is assisting the family during this time.
Fire officials have not released the official cause of the fire.
