Two people died Monday in a fiery wrong-way crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 95 in St. Lucie County.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the wreck happened just after 4:30 a.m. at mile marker 138, just south of Indrio Road, north of Fort Pierce.

According to a crash report from the FHP, an 81-year-old Delray Beach man was driving a Nissan Sentra northbound in the southbound lanes of I-95 when he collided with a Honda sedan, either a Civic or Accord.

A tractor trailer hauling pallets then slammed into the Honda, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.

The FHP said the 81-year-old driver of the Nissan Sentra, along with the unidentified driver of the Honda, were killed. A passenger in the Honda suffered “incapacitating injuries” and a 21-year-old Orlando man driving the semi truck has “non incapacitating injuries.”

Aerial video from WPTV Chopper 5 showed a white vehicle split in half, with one part smashed into a concrete median in the southbound lanes, and the second half in the grassy shoulder.

Farther down I-95 southbound, the tractor trailer was crashed on the shoulder of the highway with the front of the vehicle badly charred and damaged.

All southbound lanes of I-95 were closed for hours Monday, but eventually started reopening before 12:30 p.m.
