Deadly crash shuts down I-75 southbound near Lee and Charlotte County line

A deadly crash involving a semitrailer closed southbound lanes of Interstate 75 at Mile Marker 147 in northern Lee County Friday afternoon ahead of peak rush hour.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 28-year-old Port Charlotte man died in the crash.

The crash happened at approximately 3:38 p.m. Troopers said the Port Charlotte man was driving a Lexus two-door passenger car at a high rate of speed along I-75.

The second vehicle involved was a Freightliner semitrailer in the outside lane of I-75 southbound ahead of the Lexus.

According to FHP, the Port Charlotte man tried to make an unsafe lane change from the outside lane into the center lane as he approached the truck’s rear.

The front of the Lexus then collided with the rear left tire/axle of the truck. The Lexus then overturned across the lanes multiple times before landing upright on the grass shoulder.

According to FHP, the Port Charlotte man was unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the Freightliner was not injured in the crash.

FHP said the crash remains under investigation.
