Westbound Interstate 595 near University Drive in Davie ground to a halt early Sunday morning after a deadly crash blocked lanes and triggered a lengthy investigation. The wreck left the highway partially shut down during the morning commute, snarling one of Broward County’s busiest east-west arteries.

According to CBS News Miami, the fatal crash remains under investigation, with westbound lanes closed near University Drive in Davie as crews worked the scene. Florida Highway Patrol live incident records show the crash was dispatched at 8:42 a.m. on westbound I-595 at mile marker 6, near University Drive, immediately creating a roadblock on the highway. No further details on the number of vehicles involved, the identities of those involved, or the specific cause of the crash have been released.

The crash also lands in the middle of a stretch that’s seen heavy roadwork in recent weeks. The Town of Davie had scheduled closures and detours along State Road 84 and the I-595 corridor near University Drive from August 2 through August 28 for nightly milling, resurfacing, and striping work, altering traffic patterns in the area just days before the fatal wreck.

Under Florida Statute § 316.066, investigating officers are required to submit an official Long Form crash report to the state within 10 days of any accident resulting in death, injury, or vehicle towage. Personal identifying information tied to the crash will remain confidential for 60 days, meaning driver identities and a full account of what caused the collision likely won’t surface for some time.

This is far from the first fatal or major crash to hit this section of I-595 in Davie over the past year. In February, a fuel tanker truck rear-ended a van and rolled over near Davie Road, spilling 4,000 gallons of fuel and forcing an extended westbound closure, according to Local 10 News. Days before that, on February 1, a 22-year-old driver was killed after her car swerved off the westbound I-595 ramp to southbound I-75 and struck a guardrail and palm tree.

Farther back, a two-vehicle collision in December 2025 along the 3600 block of South University Drive left one person dead and forced extensive road closures near the I-595 interchange. And in May 2025, a tanker truck and bus collided on eastbound I-595 near Flamingo Road, one exit west of University Drive, sparking a fire and sending someone to the hospital amid major traffic backups.

Preliminary data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shows Broward County recorded 36,871 traffic crashes in 2025, averaging more than 101 collisions per day, with 199 fatal crashes resulting in 210 deaths. That total marked roughly a 10.6 percent drop in fatalities from 2024, but the numbers underscore how dangerous the county’s highways, including I-595, remain even as improvements are made.

Some relief has arrived on paper. In December 2025, the Florida Department of Transportation opened new direct-connector flyover ramps linking eastbound I-595 to I-95 express lanes at the Rainbow Interchange, aiming to eliminate hazardous weaving at one of the county’s busiest junctions. Separately, Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1662 in mid-2025, repealing the state statute that created HOV lanes and eliminating them statewide, including along the 95 Express corridor that feeds into I-595.

For now, the cause of Sunday’s fatal crash remains unresolved, and Florida Highway Patrol has not released additional details on the victims or vehicles involved. Davie residents and commuters who rely on I-595 to connect to I-95, Florida’s Turnpike, and I-75 are once again facing the reality that even a single incident near University Drive can bring a major artery to a standstill.
