Investigators say they identified the driver in a December Boynton Beach hit-and-run that killed a 60-year-old Jupiter man.
On Friday, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) arrested 54-year-old JR after cell phone records, biological material, and vehicle damage connected him to the scene.
On December 21, 2024, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) said 60-year-old Robert Elsmore was pushing an empty wheelchair when struck from behind while walking near the 6000 block of Old Congress Road around 2 a.m.
E was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival.
The vehicle left the scene, and investigators determined that the vehicle parts found at the scene identify the car as a dark blue or black Honda.
Later that day, investigators say they located the vehicle involved in the accident in the parking lot of The View at Water’s Edge in Lantana. Officials said the vehicle had heavy front-end damage, with ‘biological material’ visible on the car.
After talking with R’s brother, investigators say they learned he had sold Jesus the car a year earlier. DNA swabs later confirmed his brother’s statements when DNA swabs taken from the driver’s side matched J.
Cell phone data was also examined, showing that R was in the area at the time of the collision, according to PBSO.
While investigators say R is culpable for leaving the scene, they noted that the crash may have been avoided if E had yielded to vehicular traffic before entering the roadway.
Based on the investigation, deputies found probable cause to book R for leaving the scene of a crash involving a death.
