Deputies: Escambia County jail inmate to be charged for fellow inmate’s beating death

An Escambia County jail inmate is expected to be charged for a fellow inmate’s beating death, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident took place the afternoon of Oct. 4 in the jail infirmary, according to the county.

Deputies say 36-year-old Jorge Velasquez beat 42-year-old Kevin Johnson as they were in the same cell. Velasquez was charged with aggravated battery, while Johnson was hospitalized for treatment.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office was notified on Saturday that Johnson died from his injuries.

“The State Attorney’s Office has the case and is expected to upgrade [Velasquez’s] charges,” the sheriff’s office tells WEAR News.

Jail records showVelasquez was first arrested on Oct. 3 for trespassing, damaging property and resisting arrest. He has a hold for ICE.

Johnson had been in jail since May for larceny and drug charges, according to jail records.

No further details were released.
