A 20-year-old illegal immigrant is charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in Fort Walton Beach.

Honduran man Kevin Mauricio Escobar-Munoz was arrested Wednesday on charges of sexual battery and burglary. He also has a hold for immigration.

The alleged incident happened on April 21 on just before 7 a.m.

According to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the victim told investigators she awoke in her home “to a Hispanic male she did not know sexually assaulting her. She reported that he covered her mouth with his hand and spoke Spanish. She stated that when he finished, he hugged her and possibly left out the back door.”

A medical examination of the victim showed a positive finding for sexual abuse, according to deputies.

Last Thursday, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement reported the male DNA profile which matched the contributing male sample from the victim’s sexual assault kit belonged to Escobar Munoz.

“Investigators learned that Escobar Munoz was living within one mile of the victim’s residence,” the sheriff’s office says in a release.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Escobar Munoz was deported in September of 2022.

“I can tell you from a sheriff’s standpoint or local law enforcement, I’m tired of it,” Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden said.

Aden says Munoz was flagged by Border Patrol so he would not be allowed back in the country, but he somehow got back in. Aden says a similar crime happened in February.

24-year-old Jose Chan, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, is charged with assaulting a 14-year-old. He was arrested June 27.

“These are two 14-year-old young girls and young girls have been prayed upon by illegal aliens,” Aden said. “Ask yourself at what point does it stop?”

Aden believes most people trying to enter the United States are doing so for the right reasons.

He says these two cases are putting those people in a bad light.

“There’s a process, and there are great people that come across,” Aden said. “There is a route towards citizenship and we have great skilled laborers because of it. We have great business owners because of it. There’s a process and I understand it’s arduous, but many people do it the right way. But coming across our borders and being able to have the benefit of citizen that local citizens don’t even have, it has to stop.”

Both Chan and Munoz are in the Okaloosa County Jail.
