Abe Massre was heartbroken after his 3-year-old shih tzu Luna died during a vicious attack on Sunday at the Oakwood Hills community in Hollywood’s Liberia neighborhood.

According to Deanna Bettineschi, a spokeswoman for the Hollywood Police Department, police officers found the small dog dead outside of a house along Raleigh Street, west of North 26 Avenue.

“He had her by the neck and she was crying,” Massre said.

Massre said two large dogs without a leash attacked his two small dogs. Surveillance video shows the four dogs running. He said he used a stick and a machete, but the attacker didn’t let go until she was dead in the garage.

“I tried to save her and I couldn’t,” Massre said.

Surveillance video shows a woman and a man who owned the other dogs arriving at his home. Massre said the attacker needed stitches.

Bettineschi wrote in a statement that police officers gave the attacking dog’s owner a notice to appear and there was an ongoing investigation.

“You have a responsibility as a pet owner to do the right thing, and you really need to put your dog down,” Massre said.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
