A tense encounter in West Palm Beach turned deadly on Monday evening when an 18-year-old allegedly shot and killed a man following a confrontation that began with a thrown drink.
The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) reported that they received a ShotSpotter alert at 6:25 p.m. at 709 North Tamarind Avenue.
When officers arrived at the scene, they reported finding a man lying in a parking lot with gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries, per WPBPD.
Officers reviewed surveillance footage from the area, which captured the shooting. The video allegedly showed a blue Chevrolet truck driving through the parking lot while the victim was standing there.
According to the probable cause affidavit, as the truck passed the victim on the passenger side, the victim allegedly threw what detectives believe was a BeatBox drink at the vehicle. WPBPD said the footage shows the victim raising his hands, stumbling backward, turning away from the truck, and then collapsing as the truck sped away.
Authorities located the truck and reported identifying the driver as DT, 18.
T told WPBPD that he was driving a person and her friend to a convenience store to get a drink when the victim began a conversation with the two girls.
According to the report, T claimed that the victim used his car to block the store’s driveway, preventing them from exiting, which prompted him to retrieve his gun from the glove compartment.
T further stated that the victim threw a drink at his car, leading him to stop the truck and brandish his firearm.
He described the victim as “raging out,” but noted that he did not appear to be armed or threatening, per WPBPD. T admitted to firing three rounds at the victim but was unsure if he had struck him.
T was arrested with first-degree murder with a firearm.
