The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man accused of being the driver involved in the Flagler Estates hit-and-run incident that left a middle school student critically injured.
A PR, 46, was taken into custody.
On. Jan 10, around 7 a.m., deputies said someone found a teenage boy who had been hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Palatka Boulevard and Carpenter Avenue.
The teen, later identified as 14-year-old MM, was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition, according to the St. Johns County Fire and Rescue Department.
Deputies said M was walking to his bus stop —the pickup was scheduled for 6:08 a.m.— but he never made it.
M was left unconscious on the side of the road for about 45 minutes before someone found him and notified first responders, SJSO said.
First Baptist Church of Hastings said in a Facebook post that M suffered multiple injuries in the crash, including two broken legs, a broken wrist, dental damage, and a brain bleed that will require him to remain in the hospital for over a month while his recovery process could last between four to six months.
To help M’s family, the church is raising money for his medical bills.
“SJSO personnel worked tirelessly during this investigation which involved conducting numerous interviews, executing search warrants, examining physical evidence, and processing digital evidence to present a comprehensive case for prosecutors,” SJSO wrote in a Facebook post. “Thank you to our community for your help, patience, and understanding.”
According to the SJSO, R is being held on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, with a bond set at $100,000.
