A deputy-involved shooting closed the intersection of SR-29 and Case Road in Hendry County for hours on Saturday night and into Sunday morning, according to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office.
The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as 34-year-old Y. of Lehigh Acres. Deputies said Y was transported for medical care but later died from his injuries.
“I saw the lights down by Circle K, and I left. I just figured it was another car accident,” said K, a Hendry County resident who witnessed the scene.
According to deputies, they first got a call around 5:30 P.M. Saturday from someone reporting a reckless driver. Shortly after, they pulled Y over near Case Road, where the exchange of gunfire occurred.
According to HCSO, a short time later, deputies advised that shots had been fired. Y Jr. was transported to the hospital for injuries sustained and later died. Law enforcement officers were not injured.
The road closure stretched from Case Road to Helms Road, leaving residents like K unable to return to their homes for hours. K said she called deputies to find out what was happening.
“When I called, she was like, ’ Ma’am, this is more than just a traffic incident. It’s more severe.’ So, then I’m thinking, oh my gosh, you don’t know what to think at that point,” K said.
K added that she wants more information about the incident, especially since she did not hear any gunshots.
“It’s sad. I would like to know more details. Did someone’s life have to be taken, or were there other measures that could have been taken in that situation?” she said.
The circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation, led by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
