A man fleeing from a hit-and-run in a box truck Friday evening in Brevard County ran a red light and caused a fatal crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The latter crash occurred around 6:42 p.m. at the intersection of Hollywood and Eber boulevards, troopers said.
According to an FHP crash report, the box truck’s driver — identified as a 26-year-old Melbourne man — was traveling southbound on Hollywood Boulevard as a 67-year-old Melbourne Beach woman drove a sedan eastbound on Eber Boulevard, both of them approaching the intersection. The Melbourne man ran a red light and both vehicles then entered the intersection at the same time, causing the front of the box truck to strike the left side of the woman’s sedan, the report states.
The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital while the man was hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries, troopers said, adding charges are pending against him.
During the crash, the woman’s sedan struck another that was stopped in the northbound left-turn lane of Hollywood Boulevard, troopers said. Though the driver and passenger of that sedan suffered minor injuries in the wreck, neither of them were taken to the hospital, according to the report.
The report also mentions three other vehicles — a van, an SUV and a third sedan — which were all stopped on northbound Hollywood Boulevard and sustained some form of impact in the crash. None of their occupants were injured, however.
West Melbourne police are investigating the hit-and-run crash, troopers said.
