Driver injured after SUV crashes into home in St. Lucie County

A man in his 60s was injured when the SUV he was driving veered off the road and crashed into a home in St. Lucie County.

The crash happened around 2:45 p.m. in the 300 block of Rio Mar Drive.

Investigators with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said they believe the man suffered some sort of medical episode causing him to lose control of the SUV.

Witnesses said the SUV hit a small hill and went airborne, flying through the air and crashing into the home.

“I saw this car coming down the street, and I thought, ‘OK, maybe he’s going to stop,’” said Rafael Cabrera. “I saw the car catch flight. I saw the car catch flight.”

Cabrera and three other men were doing remodeling work inside the home when the crash happened.

“My first reaction was to scream, alert my other workers that there was a car about to crash into them,” Cabrera said.

“It was loud. It was a crash,” said another worker, Luis Alberto Mora. “I didn’t know what was happening, so I just decided to throw myself to the floor in hopes of protecting my body and myself.”

The men said they had been working right near the front door where the SUV landed.

They had just moved to a different room a minute earlier.

“If my co-worker, Rafa, didn’t scream like like, I think I would have been dead,” Mora said.

“I thought my other workers were dead,” Cabrera said. “I came out running, screaming. It was crazy, honestly. I’m still in shock that this happened.”

A passerby called 911, and the SUV was towed away a few hours later, allowing everyone a better idea of just how much damage was done to the home.

After a brief inspection, the county declared the home an “unsafe building,” meaning it is no longer structurally sound.

Sheriff Keith Pearson said the driver of the SUV was hospitalized for his injuries and for the medical episode they believe caused the crash.

His name has not been released.

The four men inside the home were not injured.

“God is real. It’s got to be,” Cabrera said. “How did it not hit any of us? It has no other explanation.”
