A deputy was hurt and another driver died due to a crash along the Florida Turnpike on Thursday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
In an FHP crash report, troopers said the crash happened around 7:04 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway near mile marker 250 in Kissimmee.
Investigators explained that the crash involved an Orange County Sheriff’s Office pickup truck and a sedan.
The truck was being driven by a 31-year-old Orlando man — a deputy with the OCSO — who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, troopers reported.
Meanwhile, the other driver — a 37-year-old St. Cloud man — later died at the hospital, the report shows.
According to the crash report, both vehicles were traveling northbound in the inside lane of Florida’s Turnpike, north of Osceola Parkway, when the deputy told troopers he had a mechanical issue which caused him to lose control of the pickup truck. The truck rotated counter-clockwise and became disabled in the inside lane, facing south in the sedan’s direct path and causing the front left of the sedan to strike the front left of the pickup, the report states.
Troopers believe the deputy was wearing a seat belt during the crash while the St. Cloud man was not, according to the report.
FHP is still investigating.
