A 72-year-old man was killed and his 73-year-old passenger was critically injured in a two-vehicle crash in Volusia County on Saturday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers said the crash happened on S.R. A1A near Sandpiper Ridge Drive around 6 p.m.
According to a crash report, a Chevrolet Corvette was behind a Jeep Wrangler traveling north on S.R. A1A, approaching Sandpiper Ridge Drive.
Troopers said the Corvette tried to pass the Wrangler in a no-passing zone and as a result, the front of the Chevrolet collided into the back of the Jeep.
According to the report, the collision cause the Jeep’s driver and passenger to be ejected from the vehicle. The driver, identified as a 72-year-old Findlay, Ohio man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, identified as a 73-year-old Ormond Beach woman, was flown to the hospital in critical condition.
The Corvette’s driver, identified as a 63-year-old Port Barrington, Illinois, man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
