A 46-year-old Texas man, parked with a truck and trailer on the shoulder of Florida’s Turnpike in Port St. Lucie, died in a crash involving a box truck, shutting the highway several for hours.
Around 7 a.m. Friday, the Florida Department of Transportation announced the closure of the southbound lanes at Mile Marker 147, about 5 miles north of the Port St. Lucie Boulevard exit.
A 2015 Freightliner truck, for an unknown reason, swerved into the right shoulder, according to Lt. Indiana Miranda, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson.
The front of the box truck collided with the back of a 2022 Dodge Ram pulling a 2021 flatbed trailer parked on the shoulder.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, of Sugarland, Texas, was outside near the rear of truck and was run over by the box truck and then pinned down by both vehicles, according to Miranda.
The man was pronounced dead on scene.
The box truck driver, a 63-year-old man from Morehead, Kentucky, and a passenger, a 39-year-old woman from Hillsboro, Kentucky, were taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce with non-incapacitating injuries, Miranda said.
