A witness said a driver “punched the gas” and tried to speed through a light prior to a fatal rollover in which he was ejected through his car’s sunroof.

JB, 76, was driving a silver Lexus shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday southbound on U.S. 301 at County Road 472 when he “punched the gas” to make it through a light, a witness told Wildwood police in the wake of the horrific accident which snarled traffic in the area.

B’s Lexus was T-boned by a gray Buick SUV which was attempting to turn onto County Road 216 from northbound U.S. 301 near the Dairy Queen restaurant. The Buick SUV was driven by a 79-year-old woman accompanied by her 80-year-old husband.

A second witness said that Berardi’s vehicle rolled over five times and in the fourth rollover, B was ejected through the sunroof.

Bystanders were the first to rush to B’s aid, rolling him over and applying tourniquets to his legs. They used their vehicles to block traffic as they began the attempted rescue. A 30-year-old man, who did not see the crash, pulled over and tried to take B’s pulse. The man began chest compressions, trying to revive B.  A deputy from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office was next on the scene and began to perform CPR.

EMS personnel soon arrived and found B was unresponsive. He had suffered fractures on his left and right ankles as well as abrasions on his abdomen. The EMS personnel applied an AED on Berardi and attached him to a monitor. He was confirmed dead at 11:11 a.m. His body was collected by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The couple in the Buick suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported by ambulance to UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital in The Villages.
