A fatal crash on Tuesday shut down part of State Road 70 in Highlands County, causing major traffic disruptions in the area.
The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office says the crash happened on SR 70 West just east of County Road 721. At least one person was killed. Investigators have not released any additional details about those involved.
The Florida Highway Patrol is handling the investigation and expects the road to stay closed for several hours while crews work the scene, according to the release.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area if possible. OCSO said traffic is being rerouted, leading to heavy backups on SR 70, U.S. 98, and nearby roads.
Officials are urging motorists to use caution, plan for delays, and take alternate routes as the investigation continues. Updates will be released as more information becomes available.
