Drunk woman in stolen vehicle slams into driver, possibly causing heart attack

A drunk driver behind the wheel of a stolen car crashed into the back of an innocent driver in Iona on Monday evening.

The crash happened on San Carlos Boulevard at Majestic Palms Boulevard around 8:41 p.m., according to a report from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say that Amber Collins, 38, was behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Jetta that was reported as stolen to the Fort Myers Police Department approximately 21 minutes earlier.

The force of the crash was so strong that doctors say it possibly caused the victim in the other vehicle to have a heart attack.

If you ask anyone along San Carlos Boulevard, they’ll tell you story after story about accidents and speeders.

“I almost got into two accidents on the way, taking my sister to a job interview,” said Nicole Kio, who drives on this road nearly every day.

Instead of San Carlos Boulevard, this is sometimes San Carlos Speedway.

Monday night was one of those instances. Lee County deputies say Collins was driving under the influence and speeding down the road in the stolen car.

As she approached the intersection of San Carlos Boulevard and Majestic Palm Boulevard, she slammed into a car pulling out from the red light.

You can still see the fresh rubber skid marks from the short distance Collins tried stopping. Now, the median and roadway are littered with car parts.

Collins’s car hopped over the median before stopping in an empty field. That’s when deputies say she got out, ran away and tried hiding in the woods. She didn’t make it long before the LCSO K9s sniffed her out.

Meanwhile, she left the woman she just rear-ended in the car. Doctors at Gulf Coast Medical Center told deputies the accident was so severe that she was possibly having a heart attack as a result.

Collins failed a breathalyzer test and was arrested on several charges including DUI, hit and run and grand theft auto.

She’s being held in the Lee County Jail without bond.
