A resident of the Plantation at Leesburg was arrested for driving under the influence after colliding with a Leesburg officer’s side mirror.
A trooper responded to a vehicle crash involving 75-year-old P on County Road 33 and Rogers Industrial Park Road in Okahumpka around 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
He observed a silver Toyota SUV with minor damage to the driver’s side mirror due to colliding with a Leesburg Police Department vehicle with minor mirror damage. The officer involved advised that he was heading south on County Road 33 when the Toyota made a left turn into his path. He had to make an evasive turn to the left to miss the vehicle, the report said.
The officer added that he could smell alcohol on P when they spoke. When the trooper talked to P, he also noticed the smell of alcohol coming from his mouth. He observed bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, as well, the report said.
P stated he was turning left from Rogers Industrial Park Road, and the next thing he knew, he was colliding with another vehicle. When asked about the damage, he pointed at his left-side driver’s mirror, the report said.
Prior to the collision, he had been playing slots at the Eagles Club in Leesburg. He initially claimed to have only drunk water that day, but later stated he had a beer around noon. The smell of alcohol grew stronger as he explained this, the report said.
P subsequently agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises. He struggled to maintain his balance, removing his flip-flops to help, without success. By the time of the third exercise, he admitted to drinking two beers at the Eagles Club, the report said.
His performance led the trooper to conclude he was under the influence. He later provided breath samples of 0.105 and 0.103, the report said.
P was arrested on charges of DUI (damage to property or person of another) and DUI. The Ohio native was booked at the Lake County Jail and released after posting $2,000 bond.
