An e-bike rider died Sunday morning after he crossed into the path of a motorcycle on Beach Boulevard and was hit, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Police said that the e-bike rider tried to cross Beach Boulevard near Leon Road just before noon Sunday and rode into the path of a man riding a Harley-Davidson west on Beach Boulevard.
Both riders were taken to the hospital, where the e-bike rider died. The motorcyclist was last reported in critical condition. It is unknown if either rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
JSO said this crash marked the 83rd traffic fatality in Duval County this year, and the seventh involving a bicyclist. They did not have data on how many involved e-bikes.
Last month, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 462, which included a provision allowing local governments to impose stricter regulations on e-bikes.
