An elderly woman escaped safely from a late-night house fire in Gulf Breeze on Sunday night, but the blaze caused major damage to her home.
At 10:13 p.m. Midway Fire District crews were dispatched to a reported residential structure fire at 1068 Sanibel Lane, according to officials.
The Santa Rosa County Emergency Communications Center said a woman called 911 to report that her home was on fire before the call was disconnected.
Moments later, a neighbor also called to report flames and heavy smoke coming from the residence and advised that an explosion had been heard inside the home, according to the Midway Fire District.
Officials say firefighters stretched hose lines and began attacking the flames, while crews conducted a primary search of the residence to ensure no one remained inside.
The search confirmed all occupants had safely escaped.
Because the interior staircase had been compromised by the fire, firefighters raised ground ladders to access the second floor and continue fire suppression and overhaul operations, according to the Midway Fire District.
Officials say the elderly woman escaped before firefighters arrived and was transported by LifeGuard E.M.S. for evaluation.
The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office was requested to conduct the cause-and-origin investigation.
Midway firefighters received assistance at the scene from Holley-Navarre Engine 41 and Battalion Chief 40, as well as Escambia County Engine 13 and Battalion Chief 2. Avalon Station 12 provided district coverage while Midway crews operated at the scene.
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control.
