Fatal crash involving wrong way driver on I-75 in Lee County

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal wrong-way crash that occurred on the northbound lanes of Interstate 75.

According to FHP, an 86-year-old man was traveling south on the northbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 139 in Lee County at around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

A 56-year-old woman was traveling north on I-75 near the same mile marker.

The two vehicles collided head-on, causing minor injuries to the male driver and critical injuries to the female driver.

The female driver was then transported to an area hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The male driver was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

FHP reported that neither vehicle contained any passengers.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
