A fatal crash on Riverside Drive in Charlotte County Wednesday afternoon resulted in the death of a 73-year-old woman, prompting local residents to express their condolences and concerns about road safety.
“There was a cop sitting here, multiple cops,” Erika Mercer, a resident, said. “It was taped off. I saw the body lying on the road.”
Mercer encountered the scene as she was driving home from work around 5 p.m. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a 57-year-old man was driving down Riverside Dr. and approaching a driveway when the woman attempted to cross the road and walked into the path of his pickup truck. The collision was fatal, and she did not survive.
“Condolences to the family,” Mercer said. “That’s very devastating.”
A neighbor shared that the woman who was killed lived nearby with her husband.
“Always walking outside and looking and seeing that his wife passed away there,” Mercer said. “It’s devastating.”
Tammy Sparger, who has lived in the area for nearly 30 years, described Riverside Drive as a dangerous stretch.
“You know how curvy Riverside is,” Spagner said over the phone. “You never know what’s coming around the corner.”
She noted that the road lacks sidewalks and speeding is a constant issue.
“Can you imagine living in a neighborhood where 30 feet from your front door, someone’s driving by at 80 miles an hour?” Sparger added.
This Thanksgiving, Mercer said she will be thinking about the woman’s husband.
“That’s unfortunate that he has to spend his holiday alone,” she said.
