Felony suspect killed in deputy-involved shooting at Arby’s in Escambia County

Felony suspect killed in deputy-involved shooting at Arby's in Escambia County

A 38-year-old man wanted for several felonies is dead following a deputy-involved shooting at an Arby’s in Escambia County Thursday evening.

Family identified the man as DLHs, who they say worked in Arby’s kitchen. According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, he had felony warrants from a June 13 incident where he’s alleged to have committed “Domestic Battery Strangulation, Aggravated Assault by holding a screwdriver to the victims throat, Burglary, and Grand Theft.”

Deputies learned on Thursday that H was at the Arby’s on Highway 98 and Suttles Lane around 3 p.m. When they spotted him in the parking lot, he took off inside the Arby’s, jumping behind the counter.

The sheriff’s office says H was then followed by deputies. As he began struggling with one deputy, he pushed him to the ground and grabbed a large knife. That’s when he confronted three other deputies. He was ordered to drop the knife.

Ignoring the orders, H started dumping items from his pocket while keeping the knife equipped, according to deputies. Employees who were caught behind the counter pleaded for him to follow the commands.

The sheriff’s office says H then went aggressively towards the deputies with a knife. Shots were fired by three deputies, killing Hayes on scene.

“No deputies were injured during the incident and by policy, all three will be placed on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts their independent investigation,” the sheriff’s office said.

This a developing story.
