The Florida Highway Patrol reports that 72 vehicles were involved in 22 total accidents on Interstate 75 south on September 26, citing distracted driving and rainy conditions that led to the shutdown of all southbound lanes for multiple hours.
On Friday, September 26, units from the Florida Highway Patrol, Ocala Fire Rescue, and other emergency personnel responded to multiple accidents that occurred on I-75 beginning after 2 p.m.
In an update provided over the weekend, the FHP stated that at least 50 vehicles had been involved and cited a 20-car pile-up among the incidents.
The first incident was reported at 2:34 p.m. by Ocala Fire Rescue. It involved multiple vehicles and occurred just south of southbound Exit 354 (U.S. Highway 27). The accident immediately impacted traffic on the roadway, slowing cars south of the exit.
As OFR and Marion County Fire Rescue units responded to the first accident, a second incident was reported on I-75 south, just a mile south of the original incident, near mile marker 353. After that second incident, first responders began dividing their attention between the crash scenes.
According to FHP, rainy conditions and distracted driving then led to dozens more semi-trucks and passenger vehicles being involved in nearly two dozen accidents thereafter.
Seven individuals were transported to local hospitals as a result of the accidents. There were no serious injuries reported by authorities.
