A 61-year-old bicyclist from Apple Creek, Ohio is in the hospital with critical injuries after Florida Highway Patrol troopers said he was hit by an intoxicated driver in Sarasota.
The driver, 23-year-old R C, has been charged with felony fleeing the scene with serious injury, reckless driving and DUI, among other charges, FHP said in a news release.
The incident happened around 4:57 p.m. Wednesday, troopers said. C was reportedly traveling west on Bahia Vista Street, approaching Kaufman Avenue, while the bicyclist was crossing the intersection.
The 23-year-old failed to stop at the red light before hitting the bicyclist, who suffered critical injuries.
Troopers said both C and his passenger, a 16-year-old girl, got out of the car after the collision. Then, C reportedly got back in the car and took off while the girl fled on foot.
C was located soon after and arrested. He is currently booked in the Sarasota County Jail. The bicyclist was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The investigation is ongoing, according to troopers.
