FHP: Man dies after Orange County deputy car loses control, spins out due to ‘mechanical issue’

A driver died after colliding with an Orange County Sheriff’s Office vehicle on Thursday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to a report from FHP, the deputy was traveling northbound on the Florida Turnpike north of Osceola Parkway just after 7 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle because of a reported mechanical issue.

FHP says the OCSO deputy car spun out and became disabled in one of the other lanes — directly in front of an oncoming vehicle.

That driver was unable to stop and struck the front left of the deputy’s car, FHP said.

The deputy was transported to Osceola Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

The driver, identified as a 37-year-old man from St. Cloud, was taken to the same hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to records from FHP, the man was not wearing a seat belt.

This crash remains under investigation.
