FHP: Passenger killed in wrong-way collision on Palmetto Expressway

One person has died following a wrong-way collision that occurred early Monday morning on the Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade County, the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed.

According to FHP Lt. Alex Camacho, at around 1 a.m., a white Mercedes-Benz SUV was traveling north in the southbound lanes of the highway, near Okeechobee Road when it collided head-on with a white Dodge SUV that was heading south.

Camacho said the collision caused the Mercedes to overturn.

A man who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the Mercedes was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes and the driver of the Dodge were both transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, Camacho said.

According to Camacho, the highway was closed for about five hours during the preliminary investigation.

The identities of those involved in the crash have not yet been released.

Charges against the driver who caused the collision were also not immediately announced.
