FHP releases details into deadly pedestrian, box truck crash on Florida’s Turnpike

A tragedy unfolded on the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike near Boynton Beach on Tuesday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) released new details of the fatality. At around 5:44 a.m., FHP and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (PBCFR) responded to a box truck versus pedestrian crash at mile marker 90 of the Turnpike, south of Lake Worth Road.

For reasons yet to be determined, a 17-year-old jumped from the Hypoluxo Road bridge onto oncoming southbound traffic of the Turnpike, according to the FHP report.

At the scene, PBCFR paramedics pronounced the teenager dead just after 6 a.m. There was no need for any other medical transports and no other injuries were reported.

All southbound lanes were closed for several hours while law enforcement conducted an investigation at the scene. At around 10 a.m., Florida 511 said the crash was cleared and traffic is moving.

FHP says the investigation remains ongoing at this time.
