FHP trooper seriously injured, struck by debris after sedan hits patrol car in Collier County

A trooper from the Florida Highway Patrol was seriously injured after being struck by debris when a sedan collided with his patrol car in Collier County.

According to a press release from FHP, the trooper was standing outside his vehicle on I-75, helping a disabled motorist on mile marker 64 early Sunday morning.

The release says another vehicle, a Toyota Sedan driven by Jonathan Ronald Munas, 32, from Sarasota, was traveling north on I-75 on the outside travel lane, approaching the trooper and his car.

FHP says that the front right of the sedan collided with the front side of the trooper’s vehicle. The force of the impact separated the front left tire and bumper of the patrol car.

Debris hit the trooper, giving him serious injuries, FHP says. He was transported to an area hospital.

Munas was arrested on DUI charges after FHP says he had a blood alcohol content of .159. He was transported to the Collier County Jail.
