WEAR News has more information on the shocking incident in an Escambia County neighborhood we first told you about on Wednesday.
The Florida Highway Patrol says USPS driver 41-year-old WW Jr. intentionally tried to run down a 10-year-old child.
This all happened in the area of Kingfisher Way and Kingfisher Court.
The incident happened on Dec. 27, but troopers did not make an arrest until New Year’s Eve.
WEAR News doesn’t exactly know where this happened or if W is still employed with the postal service.
Walking in the area of Kingfisher Court, it’ll be hard to find something out of the ordinary, but what happened here, neighbors had to read to believe.
“What comes to your mind when you read that? It’s heartbreaking; this is a very quiet neighborhood,” neighbor Alexus Brown said.
This FHP report states W dropped off a package at a home in the area of Kingfisher Way and Kingfisher Court.
A 10-year-old noticed the package was delivered to the wrong home.
The report states the 10-year-old got on his scooter with the package to deliver it to the right home.
Troopers say W thought the child was stealing the package and then purposely drove the postal service truck toward the child.
Troopers say the child was able to jump off the scooter at the last second and suffered an ankle injury.
The child was taken to the Studer Family Children’s Hospital in Pensacola.
WEAR News spoke to Florida Highway Patrol Captain Jason King over the phone.
“This isn’t just an oops crash with a 10-year-old. This is an intentional act by a United States postal worker trying to run over a 10-year-old,” King said.
“I think he did go too far. If anything, not to chase the kid, but try and find a parent or an adult to talk to,” Brown said. “As I read the article, the kid saw the address as a mistake, and he or she was just trying to help.”
The report states W then yelled at the child and grabbed the scooter from underneath the postal truck.
The report says the parents of the child tried to confront W.
FHP says W dropped the scooter off in a nearby yard and left the scene.
Three days later, after troopers interviewed witnesses, W was arrested and taken to the Escambia County Jail.
“It’s amazing what a small conversation would do in a situation instead of jumping straight to use of force,” King said. “Putting your hands on somebody, or just really escalating way past where it should have been. It’s a ten-year-old on a scooter. It’s not a normal porch pirate running up snatching packages that you just dropped off.”
W was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $5500 bond. He’s due in court on Jan. 23.
