Two people are dead following a fiery three-vehicle crash that occurred on Del Prado Boulevard in Cape Coral.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, the crash occurred around 8:23 p.m. on Sunday near Southeast 40th Street and Del Prado Boulevard.
The road was temporarily closed, with CCPD and Lee County Emergency Services working to clear the scene.
According to police, a vehicle traveling north on Del Prado Boulevard in the inside left lane at Southeast 40th Street had attempted to move across three southbound lanes.
A second vehicle was traveling behind a third on the inside straight lane of Del Prado Boulevard south.
The first vehicle then tried to pass west across the three southbound straight lanes on Del Prado. The third vehicle then slowed before reaching Southeast 40th Street to avoid the first vehicle as it passed west across the path of the third vehicle.
This action caused the second vehicle to suddenly change lanes from the inside straight lane to the middle southbound travel lane.
The abrupt action caused the second vehicle to hit the right passenger side of the first vehicle. The impact caused the first car to flip onto its roof, with vehicle two continuing to push the vehicle toward the southbound shoulder of the road.
The first vehicle continued to slide on the roof before striking a cement light pole, catching fire in the process.
The vehicle became engulfed in flames.
While still in motion, the second vehicle rotated clockwise, striking the right front and side of the third vehicle.
Vehicle three passed in the inside straight lane and then crossed over the raised cement median, traveling south in the northbound lane.
The second vehicle ultimately came to the cement median that separates the southbound and northbound lanes of Del Prado Boulevard directly east of vehicle one.
The driver and passenger of the vehicle in the fiery crash died at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.
First responders treated the driver and passenger of the third vehicle at the scene.
The identities of the crash victims were not released, as the next-of-kin had not yet been notified.
