Fire sparked by fireworks damages popular Jensen Beach cafe

A fire sparked by discarded fireworks early Wednesday morning has damaged the Sand Dune Cafe in Jensen Beach and is now under investigation.

“So it looks like it was possibly caused by some discarded fireworks in the trash can, all the clues are leading to that,” Martin County Fire Rescue District Chief T H said.

The popular restaurant, owned by Martin County, sits on the waterfront along Northeast Ocean Boulevard and is now closed indefinitely.

“It’s just really tragic when people don’t take care of what belongs to all of us,” Jensen Beach resident D W said.

“Everybody likes coming here on the weekends. I love the food here, take it to the beach, eat it, make a day out of it,” J W, another Jensen Beach resident, shared his fondness for the cafe.

The fire spread to the wooden decking and the outdoor bathroom area attached to the cafe’s outdoor seating area. Fortunately, no one was injured.

“Most of the damage was to the exterior of the building. There is a canopy tarp that was also damaged in the fire,” H said.

Fire officials are now warning people and reminding them how to properly dispose of fireworks. They recommend soaking fireworks in a bucket filled with water for 24 to 48 hours before discarding them. Wrapping the soaked fireworks in a plastic bag can also help prevent them from drying out.

As for the fire at Sand Dune Cafe, the State Fire Marshal is investigating.
