At 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Martin County Fire Rescue (MCFR) was called to a fire at the Sand Dune Café on the Jenson Beach Boardwalk.

According to MCFR, crews launched into action, extinguishing the blaze which caused extensive damage to the boardwalk, bathrooms, Sand Dune Café, and surrounding area.

According to a preliminary investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire likely began in a nearby trash can be due to discarded fireworks.

Martin County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer C P said knowing how to properly dispose of fireworks is essential.

“I think the intention there was probably good, to throw away fireworks after they’ve been used,” P said. “The problem was they didn’t consider the fact that those fireworks were still a potential threat.”

MCFR reminds the public that the proper was to dispose of used fireworks is to soak them for 15 minutes to 48 hours before discarding.

It’s unclear how long it will take to repair, and the damaged area will be closed until further notice.
