Fireworks Likely Killed Florida Man Found Dead in Roadway: Police

Authorities in Florida say a man initially thought to be the victim of a shooting on New Year’s may have been killed by an accidental discharge of fireworks.

Officers in Florida’s capital, Tallahassee, had initially responded to reports of gunfire on New Year’s Day around 2:15 a.m., the city’s police department wrote in a statement.

They found a victim dying of an apparent gunshot wound in the roadway. The unnamed man died of his injuries at the scene.

Investigators with the city’s Violent Crimes Unit now say the incident was “possibly an accidental death caused by fireworks.”

“At this time, the investigation remains ongoing pending a full autopsy to determine the manner of death,” the department said.

Although rare, deaths from consumer-grade fireworks aren’t unheard of; between 2019 and 2021, there were an average of 20 non-occupational deaths from fireworks each year, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
