GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – Five people were transported to UF Shands Hospital in Gainesville after a serious crash on U.S. 441 Southbound in Micanopy near Tuscawilla Road.
At least one confirmed pediatric patient is being transported as well.
The roadway is currently blocked, and officials are asking drivers to find an alternate route until it is reopened.
The University of Florida sent out alerts identifying the incident as a mass casualty to let workers know about incoming patients.
University officials provided the following explanation in response to concerns about the alert:
“The UF Alert Emergency Notification system is designed to reach members of the UF community to inform them of an incident that requires immediate action or the attention of its recipients.
Using the same technology, UF Alert-Shands serves the UF Health Shands Hospital, and is distinct from UF Alert-Gainesville which serves the main UF campus. UF Alert-Shands messages are intended for Shands employees, as well as UF faculty, staff and students who have academic work in the hospital or support UF Health Shands operations.
Today’s message was used to notify those involved in Shands operations that the hospital’s mass casualty plan was being activated due to the anticipated arrival of several people who suffered serious or critical injuries in a vehicle crash off campus. The message was labeled as “UF Alert-Shands” and was not issued to the Gainesville campus.
Unfortunately, the lack of detail in the messages created confusion. As shared through our flagship social media channels, there was never a threat to public safety on campus. The university is in the process of reviewing the language in the messages to avoid raising alarm in the future.
