A Florida woman shot her son-in-law the day after his son — and her new grandson — was born, according to an arrest report.
Sally Conley, 69, is charged with attempted murder.
Talking to Delray Beach Police Department officers, Richard Keating explained his mother-in-law, Conley, was looking after his three-year-old daughter while his wife was in the hospital after giving birth to their son the day before, according to the probable cause affidavit against her.
Keating told them he arranged with Conley to take over caring for his daughter on Sunday. According to the report, when Keating arrived home to get his daughter, Conley was waiting outside his front door and asked him, “Did you see the rainbow?”
Right after that Conley fired, Keating continued. He added that he believed a second shot went off before he tackled Conley into a bush and ran to his neighbors to seek help.
Keating described the handgun Conley used as a dark two-shot Derringer, similar to one he owns and keeps locked away and he had informed the officers that he believed Conley intended to kill him.
Keating’s neighbor had reportedly heard three gunshots which had prompted him to call DBPD on Sunday evening around 6:30 p.m. Upon arrival at SW 29th Avenue, near SW 2nd Street, the officers found Keating lying on the ground at his neighbor’s home injured and covered in blood.
Officers reported that Keating had a gunshot wound on the upper left side of his chest, with an exit wound on his back. Keating was then transported to DMC and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities found Conley at her home shortly after the shooting and her husband mentioned she had returned from their son-in-law’s home but was unaware of any issues, investigators said.
Conley stated she never saw Keating at his house, according to the affidavit. However, police reported noticing recent bruises on Conley’s arm and knee, consistent with Keating’s account of pushing her into a bush.
Conley was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on Monday with charges of Attempted Homicide Pursuant. The judge ordered Conley to be held on no bond during her first appearance.
