Florida officer accidentally shoots man with his own gun

A Florida police officer is without a job after accidentally firing a man’s gun during a traffic stop.

On Dec. 13, 2024, a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office officer stopped a vehicle for running a red light. Two other officers, including one identified as M. Cardwell, responded to the traffic stop.

The car’s steering column was damaged, leading officers to suspect the vehicle may have been stolen.

Officials said the driver was cooperative and told them he had a gun on his person. When he exited the vehicle, Cardwell went to remove the gun.

As the officer reached for the gun, it fired, striking the driver in the leg. Officers lowered the driver to the ground and called for help before putting a tourniquet on his leg.

A JSO internal investigation resulted in a sustained charge of incompetence against Cardwell.

The agency has begun the process of terminating the officer.
