Florida woman fatally struck in hit-and-run crash in Rochester Hills

STUART, Fla. —

A Florida woman was fatally struck by a motorist on M-59 in a hit-and-run crash in Rochester Hills early Friday, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 30-year-old woman of Lauderhill, Fla. was hit as she ran across the lanes of M-59 by a motorist driving eastbound, west of South Livernois Road just before 7:30 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The driver fled and later turned himself in, police reported.

The woman, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver, a 42-year-old Macomb man, did not stop at the crash scene. He told investigators he thought he had hit some debris in the road until he heard later that a woman had been struck and killed.

Alcohol and drug use by the driver did not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to the investigation.

Police said the victim was among a group involved in a series of larcenies from vehicles in the area, whowere under surveillance at the time by the Troy Special Investigations Unit.

As detectives moved to arrest the suspects in a parking lot, two men fled from the vehicle they were in and were arrested after a brief foot chase, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The slain woman, the third suspect, fled and was fatally struck, prompting the closure of the highway eastbound for nearly five hours, police reported.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (248) 858-4950.
