FWC: 1 boater dead, another hospitalized after both went missing in Matanzas River

UPDATE: Chad Weber with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission tells First Coast News the second person St. Johns County Fire Rescue and other agencies were looking for in the Mantanzas River, was pulled from the water and pronounced dead as the search ended around 2 a.m. Friday.

St. Johns County Fire Rescue, assisted by several other agencies, is searching the Matanzas River for a missing person after a boating accident Thursday evening. The first call reporting the accident came in at 9:41 p.m., and the search was ongoing as of 12:23 a.m. Friday.

SJCFR Public Information Officer Chris Naff says two passengers were thrown from the boat. One has already been rescued. They sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Officials are searching the area north of State Road 312 for the other passenger.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has deployed an Aviation Unit helicopter, Naff said.

Law enforcement is searching by boat and has deployed drones.

In addition to SJCFR and JSO, the U.S. Coast Guard, St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, St. Johns County Marine Rescue, St. Augustine Police Department and Florida Fish & Wildlife were on scene.
