Two of three traffic crashes that happened in Gainesville in the past 24 hours are hit-and-runs, and police officers are trying to track down the drivers who left the scene.
A couple stopped to help a woman who was hit while driving a scooter along Northeast Waldo Road on Tuesday morning. The driver who hit her left the scene.
“I can’t understand how someone can do such a thing to leave someone basically on the side of the road to die,” said Clancy Fusilier.
Fusilier was traveling down Northeast Waldo Road heading to work when her morning routine changed. In her rearview mirror, she noticed a woman who was driving a scooter had just been hit.
“My boyfriend told me, you know, turn around, turn around, we’ve got to stop. So we came back, and we got to the scooter and couldn’t find a person and had to travel down the road a little ways to find the person who had gotten hit,” Fusilier said.
Road conditions and driver behavior
Fusilier said before the accident, cars were acting irrationally and speeding around the scooter. She said this stretch of road is not lit very well, and traffic always moves very fast.
Fusilier said she didn’t think twice when it came to turning around and helping the woman who was hit. She said she tried to keep her talking until EMS crews arrived. The victim asked, “Why would someone hit me?”
“The victim was alone and scared. You don’t want them to stay by themselves. You want somebody to be there with you. I’d want that for my child, I’d want to do that for someone else’s,” Fusilier said.
Two additional crashes reported
About 15 minutes away, just before 8:30 a.m., a motorcyclist was hit by a vehicle near Archer Road and Southwest 13th Street. That driver also left the scene but left their car.
Another accident happened just after midnight. A 49-year-old man was found lying on the road on Southwest 34th Street near Hull Road after a scooter and an electric bicycle collided in the bike lane.
“I’m glad she’s going to be ok,” Fusilier said.
Officials with the Gainesville Police Department said the woman on the scooter is stable, but the motorcyclist is still in critical condition. They are investigating the hit-and-runs and trying to track down the drivers.
