Gainesville police recommend charges for mother after crash killing toddler, infan

The Gainesville Police Department has filed a sworn complaint recommending that a mother be charged with negligence following a fatal car crash in July involving her two young children.

C G, 29, may be charged on two counts of negligent aggravated manslaughter of a child.

The crash occurred July 10 on Southwest Williston Road near the I-75 on-ramp. Officers say Gordan’s two children, a 22-month-old toddler and a 6-month-old infant, were without a car seat.

They say they believe the infant was sitting in G’s lap while the toddler was in the front passenger seat. No one was wearing a seatbelt.

“The seatbelts were locked in the upright position, so obvious that no one was belted in,” said Art Forgey, a spokesperson for the police department. “It just takes time to go through and download all the facts and recreate what happened.”

Investigators say they also found an infant car seat in the trunk of the car that was not in use.

According to police department officials, the driver of the other vehicle involved, DM, has been given a traffic citation for failure to yield when making a left turn.

G has not yet been arrested, and the State Attorney’s Office will decide whether to pursue these charges.

Safe Kids North Central Florida, led by UF Health Shands’ Children’s Hospital, helps parents and caregivers prevent injuries to children. Find out more about the next car seat check here.
