Detectives have released a man from custody after he brought his wife to the hospital with a gunshot wound.
Gainesville Police Department officers say just before 5 a.m., UF Health Shands workers reported a 23-year-old woman had arrived in the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
She died in the hospital. The victim was brought to the ER by her husband, a 26-year-old, who officers took into custody for questioning. He was released from custody Tuesday afternoon.
After his release, officials say “the investigation is continuing.”
Investigators identified the couple’s home on the 100 block of Northwest 7th Terrace as a crime scene. They swept the scene and collected evidence.
“I was completely shocked,” said TR. “We woke up just the typical morning getting ready for my last day of classes and when we heard what happened, I was completely shocked. This is a really quiet street. I have never heard any disturbances before.”
O W, who also lives nearby, recalled the eerie morning.
“It did not feel real at first,” W said. “We were kinda snooping around, wondering—oh, there’s tape out—like, I wondered what happened. Was it a robbery or something? Then the more we watched, the more unsure we were. We did have a police officer come and tell us what had been going on.”
Another neighbor, DS, said he was caught off guard.
“I had no idea what was going on,” he said. “I asked the police officers if everything was okay, if there was anything I needed to be concerned about. They said they had it under control and that everything was alright, so that was reassuring—but I didn’t know what happened.”
This developing story will be updated as more information is learned.
