A Thursday night at a Fort Pierce Cemetery turned into chaos as a brush fire erupted into a raging inferno, engulfing a maintenance building.
The St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) reported that at 9:08 PM, multiple fire units rushed to the scene near Kings Highway and US1, only to discover en route that the brush fire had escalated to a full-blown structure fire at Hillcrest Cemetary.
Upon arrival, firefighters reported encountering a 50-foot by 30-foot maintenance building engulfed in flames.
The report stated that the intensity of the fire posed significant challenges, particularly due to the cemetery’s layout and the absence of nearby fire hydrants. In response, crews implemented a tanker shuttle to ensure a continuous supply of water.
Emergency personnel reported no injuries among staff or visitors at the cemetery.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
